Hey girl! I am exactly like you, I freaking LOVE my job! I went into this career all bright eyed and bushy tailed thinking I’d be able to be behind the chair 5 days a week until retirement. I think we both know by now, that is a lot harder said than done. This career is hard on our bodies, physically + mentally.
I’ve been a hairstylist for a short 7 years, and in that time I have discovered that I am passionate about learning how to align myself with holistic wealth while working behind the chair. To clarify, when I say holistic wealth, what I mean is my overall health and wellbeing without sacrificing revenue from the services I offer behind the chair. I want that for you as well, because its no secret that this job is physically demanding. Furthermore, as hairstylists we often posses that hustle mentality, which in itself can be a recipe for burnout. We serve our guests, standing on our feet for sometimes (who am I kidding… most of the time) 10+hours a day, then have to do all the backend work of running a small business. Phew, just thinking about it makes me tired.
I believe it’s so important, maybe now more than ever, that we take care of our bodies so we can have the strength to serve our guests from a place of abundance and still have energy for ourselves and our families at the end of the day.
You’re probably asking?! and how the heck can I do that? and during covid?! I know, I know; on top of everything, Covid has put so many restrictions on how we run our business while maintaining the safety and wellbeing of ourselves and our guests… However, there are ways, promise! In fact, a couple of tips off the top of my head for creating a holistically wealthy and sustainable business behind the chair are:
- Create firm boundaries for yourself. No one is more equipped to understand when you really need a break, but you.
- Create clear cut guidelines for how your appointments run with your guests as well as solid opening and closing hours.
- Remove as many toxins from your work space as possible
- Treat your body with kindness and grace, seeking out whatever treatments you need to help alleviate the effects of this physically demanding job.
